The Annapurna Base Camp Trek is a popular trekking route located in the Annapurna region of Nepal. It takes you through diverse landscapes, from terraced fields to lush forests, charming villages, and alpine meadows. Ultimately leading to the Annapurna Base Camp at an altitude of 4,130 meters (13,549 feet). ABC trek offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges, including majestic peaks like Annapurna I (8,091m/26,545ft), Annapurna South (7,219m/23,684ft), Machhapuchhre (6,993m/22,943ft), and Hiunchuli (6,441m/21,131ft).

The trek typically starts from Nayapul and follows a well-marked trail through various villages and forests, with overnight stays at teahouses or lodges along the way. The trek involves moderate to challenging levels of physical fitness. There are some steep ascents and descents, and the altitude gradually increases as you approach the Annapurna Base Camp. However, the stunning scenery, unique cultural experiences, and warm hospitality of the local people make the Annapurna Base Camp Trek a truly rewarding adventure for nature lovers and trekkers alike. The best time to do the trek is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons, when the weather is relatively stable and the views are at their best.

Trek Duration:

The Annapurna Base Camp Trek typically takes around 10-12 days, depending on the pace of trekking and acclimatization breaks taken along the way and also the different places you choose to visit. The actual trekking days may vary based on the itinerary chosen and individual preferences. The trekking day also depends on the different places you want to visit along the trail. This is our short 8 days Itinerary which excludes places like Ghorepani, and Poonhill which are included in our other Annapurna Base Camp Ghorepani Trek.

Trek Difficulty:

The ABC Trek is moderately difficulty. It involves walking on uneven terrain, ascending and descending steep trails, and crossing rivers and suspension bridges. Altitude is also a factor, as the trek takes you to an elevation of 4,130 meters (13,549 feet) at Annapurna Base Camp. It is better to have Prior trekking experience at high altitudes and a reasonable level of fitness.

Accommodation:

Along the trekking route, there are teahouses or lodges available for accommodation. These teahouses offer basic facilities such as shared rooms with beds, blankets, and common dining areas where trekkers can have meals. The teahouses also provide meals like dal bhat (rice and lentil curry), noodles, soups, and other local and Western dishes. However, as you gain altitude, the facilities may become more basic and the availability of electricity, hot water, and Wi-Fi may be limited.

Permits:

Trekkers are required to obtain a TIMS (Trekkers’ Information Management System) card. Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) to enter the Annapurna Conservation Area, which is a protected region. These permits can be obtained from Kathmandu or Pokhara. You’ll need to provide your passport, and passport-sized photos, and pay the respective fees.

*Note: Nepal Government has banned solo trekking in Nepal and the rule might be followed strictly in the next season which is October/November.

Altitude Acclimatization:

As the trek involves gaining altitude, it’s important to acclimatize properly to prevent altitude sickness. Acclimatization days are usually built into the itinerary, allowing for gradual ascent and rest days at higher altitudes. It’s important to stay hydrated, eat well, and take it slow to adjust to the changing altitude.

Weather:

The weather in the Annapurna region can vary greatly depending on the season. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best times to trek. With clear skies, moderate temperatures, and blooming rhododendron forests in spring. However, temperatures can drop significantly, especially at higher altitudes.

Itinerary

Day 01 Arrival in Kathmandu.
* Arrive in Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal.
* Transfer to your hotel and rest.
* Explore the vibrant streets of Kathmandu and get a taste of Nepalese culture.

Day 02 From Kathmandu to Pokhara by bus 0.0 km (820 m)
* Take a scenic flight or a drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara (820m/2,690ft) which takes about 6-7 hours by road.
* Arrive in Pokhara, a beautiful lakeside city nestled in the foothills of the Annapurna range.
* Explore the lakeside area and enjoy the stunning views of the Himalayas.
* Overnight stay at Pokhara.

Day 03 Pokhara to Jhinudada(2300 m) to Sinwa 9.8 km (2300 m)
* Drive from Pokhara to Jhinudada (1,070m/3,510ft), which takes about 2-3 hours.
* Begin your trek from Jhinudada and hike to Sinwa(1,540m/5,052ft) which takes about 4-5 hours.
* Walk through terraced fields, quaint villages, and rhododendron forests.
* Overnight stay at Sinwa.

Day 04 Sinwa to MBC 5.8 km (3700 m)
* Trek from Sinwa to MBC(2,310m/7,579ft) which takes about 4-5 hours.
* Descend through stone steps and cross the Chhomrong Khola (river).
* Pass through dense forests of bamboo and rhododendron.
* Overnight stay at MBC.

Day 05 Hike from MBC to ABC (4109 m) and return back to Bamboo 5.8 km (3100 m)
* Early morning hike from MBC to ABC which takes about 1-2 hours.
* Watch the sunrise at ABC have lunch and trek back to Bamboo.
* Overnight stay at Bamboo.

Day 06 Bamboo to Chomrong 3.9 km (3700 m)
* Trek from Bamboo to Chomrong (3700 m) which takes about 4-5 hours.
* Descend through stone steps and cross the Chhomrong Khola (river).
* Pass through dense forests of bamboo and rhododendron.
* Overnight stay at Chmrong.

Day 07 Chomrong to Jhinu Dada to Pokhara
* Trek from Bamboo to Jhiny Dada for 2-3 hours.
* Enjoy the hot spring at Jhiny Dada and have lunch.
* Head to the jeep station and drive back to Pokhara.
* Overnight stay at Pokhara.

Day 08 Pokhara to Kathmandu 12.7 km (2335 m)
* Arrive in Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal.
* Transfer to your hotel and rest.
